If you’re looking for a scenic, family-friendly day out in Hampshire, West Green House Gardens is a must-visit destination. Set just outside the village of Hartley Wintney, this beautifully landscaped garden with a rich 300-year history is open from spring through to Christmas, offering seasonal delights and peaceful strolls year-round.
As National Trust members, Rosie and I have visited lots of sites across the country, and oddly, the West Green House gardens are the closest to us, but we’ve never been.
Isn’t that always the way?!
Last weekend, Rosie, baby Millie and I were blown away by the stunning feature walks, along with the warm welcome from the staff, and the tranquil setting.
Whether you’re into horticulture (I can’t say I am), history, or just a relaxing cream tea, there’s something special waiting behind the garden gates.
Arrival
West Green House is easy to find using sat nav, with plenty of space to park your car. A short walk past the greenhouse and you’ll find the gift shop, which also doubles as garden entry.
We had a warm and friendly welcome, with clear instructions and guidance as to how to explore the gardens for our experience at the West Green House gardens.
Garden Features
From formal borders to playful follies (ornamental buildings), West Green House Gardens offers a rich variety of landscaping features, starting in the wild gardens and moving through to the more manicured formal gardens:
- Ten ornamental follies, including a stunning Nymphaeum that overlooks the historic Walled Garden
- Paradise Garden, featuring a beautiful central fountain and the Five Bridges Garden, which is stunning this time of year
- Spring blooms include tulips, daffodils, and hyacinths that transform the gardens into a tapestry of colour
- Carefully designed pathways make for an enchanting and enjoyable walk, particularly for kids and curious explorers alike
The whole site has been designed and nurtured by Marylyn Abbott, whose personal touch gives the gardens both structure and soul.
The Green House
The estate’s 18th-century country house is listed as Grade II* and stands as the centrepiece of the grounds. Though privately managed, the house and gardens rival any National Trust property in terms of beauty and historical value.
We absolutely loved the wisteria that frames the entrance to the greenhouse – perfect for a quick photo!

The gardens are a short drive from Yateley, Fleet, Hook and Basingstoke, making it an ideal escape into nature for those in Hampshire and beyond. On-site parking is available (£4 per vehicle) and the area is well-signposted.

West Green House Gardens offers more than just a beautiful view. Each summer, the gardens host a popular opera season, where guests can enjoy live performances beside the lake, surrounded by blooming borders and candlelit pathways.

Partnership with National Trust
Although not owned or managed by the National Trust, West Green House Gardens is featured in their garden partnership scheme. This means National Trust members enjoy free entry upon showing a National Trust Membership card, helping to make it even more accessible to heritage enthusiasts. Keep in mind though, that this doesn’t apply to special events. If you head along to any of those, you’ll need a separate ticket.

Facilities are family-friendly, and paths are largely accessible, although some gravel paths and bridges may be trickier with pushchairs or mobility aids. You don’t need to pre-book tickets, although again, for special events this may be a requirement.
