I like to draw. I don’t consider myself as very good at it to be honest – I’m definitely a hobbyist.

Since the split, I’ve found it really difficult to slow down my thoughts and just…relax. It feels like my phone never stops buzzing and I never stop moving at 100mph.

That’s why I started drawing again for the first time in 10 years.

1. Sketch the outline

I started by quickly sketching the outline of the photo, trying to mark out any key areas of light and dark. It’s worth spending the time at this stage to save you going back over it later!

2. Highlight the really dark areas with charcoal

This is about creating as much contrast as possible between your light and dark areas. This is what makes your drawings ‘pop’.

You can see that I’d started subtly shading some mid-grey areas using a graphite pencil too…

3. Introduce the detail

Next I started to add a little detail to soften the harsh darks and lights in the picture.

4. And finished!

Framed, signed and in my hallway so I can see it every time I come home.
